Preparation
Before you start, make sure all your equipment is ready and preheated. The Aeropress is known for its versatility, letting you experiment with all kinds of techniques, but here's a simple recipe to get you started.
Equipment
- Aeropress — with filter cap and a paper or metal filter
- Stirring paddle — or a spoon
- Scale — optional, for precise measurements
- Timer
- Mug
Ingredients
- Coffee — 15g, medium-fine grind
- Water — 240ml, around 90–95°C (194–203°F)
Suggested brew: beginner method (inverted)
This method uses the inverted (upside-down) Aeropress setup, which gives you more control over extraction time and stops coffee dripping before you're ready to press. With a 1:16 ratio, it's designed for a balanced cup with minimal bitterness.
Step-by-step instructions
Prepare the grind
Use a medium-fine grind for 15g of coffee, roughly the size of sugar granules.
Set up the Aeropress
Place the Aeropress upside down (plunger at the bottom) and insert the plunger to create a seal. This stops coffee dripping out before you're ready.
Pre-wet the filter
Put your filter in the filter cap and rinse it with hot water. This removes any papery taste and helps the cap seal tightly later. Set the cap aside for now.
Add coffee
Add 15g of medium-fine ground coffee into the Aeropress chamber.
Start the timer and pour
Start the timer and pour 240ml of water (90–95°C) over the grounds. Pour slowly and evenly to saturate all the coffee.
Stir
After pouring, stir gently for about 10 seconds to make sure the extraction is even.
Steep
Let the coffee steep for about 1 minute. This longer contact time extracts more fully and builds a richer flavour.
Attach the filter cap
Secure the filter cap onto the Aeropress, then carefully flip the whole thing over onto your mug.
Press
Press the plunger down slowly and steadily until you hear a hissing sound. This should take around 30 seconds.
Enjoy
Your Aeropress coffee is ready. Add water for a milder cup, or drink it as is for a stronger, full-bodied brew.
Troubleshooting
Too bitter
Try slightly cooler water or reduce the steep time.
Too weak
Increase the coffee dose slightly, or use a finer grind.
Too gritty
Use a paper filter instead of metal, or grind a little coarser.
